About this time of year, nature’s annual renewal inspires many of us to follow suit, and nothing may be more satisfying than giving your home a deep clean. Sure, it will take more work and more time than a typical cleaning, but it’s so worth it!
Our ultimate spring cleaning checklist contains everything you will need to give your home a fresh new start. To avoid being overwhelmed by these detailed tasks, break up this list into several doable assignments for optimal success!
Wipe Walls and Ceilings
Tackle dust and more, starting with the major surfaces in your home. Using a vacuum is an efficient way to remove the dust, but for stubborn spots, especially in the kitchen, use a degreaser.
Clean and Reseal Grout Lines
An easy way to give things a refresh is to reseal grout lines. Over time, they wear away and can easily stain. Clean grout with a toothbrush dipped in soapy water before you replace grout or seal it.
Vacuum and Shampoo Rugs
Deep clean carpets and rugs to refresh the most heavily tracked surface of your home. Use a shampoo machine on carpets and rugs with waterproof backings. Trust rugs without backings to a professional cleaner.
Dust Books and Shelves
Remove everything from shelves and dust it all. Use a duster, a vacuum or a soft cloth to reach every surface, from the shelves to the books and other decor that may be displayed for a truly thorough clean.
Clean Upholstered Furniture
Take the cushions off your upholstered couches and chairs and treat any stains in accordance with care labels. Vacuum them to remove dust, and also use appropriate attachments to clean under the cushions as well.
Polish Metal Hardware on Doors and Windows
Add some sparkle to metal surfaces like doorknobs, hinges, locks and more. Use liquid polishes or polish-infused cloths to make doors and windows look new again. For tough tarnishes, use pastes and creams to do the work.
Dust Your Home Thoroughly
Get rid of the dust from the hard-to-reach and easily forgotten spaces, like ceiling fans, windows and the top of the refrigerator. Work from the top of the room down, and finish by vacuuming the floor.
Wax Wooden Furniture and Non-Wood Floors
Refresh wooden furniture and non-wood floors with a wax or paste that is suited for the material you are cleaning. This can wake up dull vinyl and linoleum floors, but stone and tile floors can also shine as well.
Wash Windows and Window Screens
Clean windows with a mix of one part vinegar to 10 parts warm water in a spray bottle. Wipe the surface to remove dust before you spray and clean. For screens, use warm water and mild dishwashing liquid, scrub with a brush and rinse.
Treat Window Treatments
Refresh draperies and curtains in the wash if appropriate. (Check labels to be sure.) Remove dust from wooden blinds with a damp cloth. Use warm water and a mild liquid soap to clean metal and vinyl blinds.
Launder Bedding and Pillows
Take the time to wash mattress pads, pillows, blankets and bedspreads. Some can be put in the wash; others may have to go to a dry cleaner. Now is also a good time to vacuum flip your mattress to promote even wear.
Clear Out Closets
Wipe down closet surfaces and vacuum floors. Remove and reorganize clothes. While doing so, do an inventory and get rid of any that you no longer want or need. Collect these items and sell, donate or toss.
